How to use the Cover Template with Tag, Category and Taxonomy pages on Twenty Twenty Theme

The WordPress default theme Twenty Twenty has a Cover Template that allows single posts or pages to show the featured image as a cover or hero image in the header of the page.

We thought it would be great to be able to use this layout for taxonomy pages like the tag and category archive pages so we’ve added this functionality to our Options for Twenty Twenty Premium plugin.

Once installed and active, go to “Dashboard – Appearance – Customise” then in the Customiser, go to “General Options – Archive Cover Template.

From here you can choose which taxonomies on your site (the default ones are tags and categories) you’d like to show using the Cover Template.

But what about the featured images?

Once you’ve chosen to show your tag or category pages using the Cover Template and you’ve published your changes in the customiser, you will then to be able to choose or upload an image by editing the tag or category!

The image picker will use the Twenty Twenty “twentytwenty-fullscreen” image size which is 1980 pixels wide so make sure you upload or choose an image that is sufficient in quality.
